Babbdi

Brutalism

This week's recommendation is Babbdi, a game developed by the sibling team of Sirius and Léonard Lemaitr, also known as the Lemaitr Brothers.

Babbdi is a short exploration-based game in which you are tasked with escaping the city of Babbdi. The city is a large, empty, dark and brutalist, with imposing towering structures enclosing dingey little alleyways. Although it is never stated, much of the architecture feels evocative of Soviet Bloc Housing.

Strewn across the city, you will find various oddities, including weird characters, strange collectables and blizzard places.

The game has no outright threats, but there is an unsettling atmosphere in a number of its locations.

Gameplaywise, the game is fairly straightforward: you have basic first-person controls and can hold one tool at a time that augments your movement. These tools include a pickaxe that you can use to climb and a bat that launches you away from whatever you swing it at.

There isn't much of a story that you're given, but throughout your exploration you can find bits and pieces that might reveal a little bit about Babbdi.

I won't reveal any more about what you can find in the game, because much of the fun comes from making those discoveries for yourself.

Babbdi is weird, funny, short and free, and it's not like you had any plans for this afternoon anyway. Why not give it a go?

You can find the Babbdi's Steam page here.
