If you are a fan of internet horror, you’ve probably come across at least one work by Slimebeast. His catalogue of stories includes Red Sky at Night, Whimsywood, Abandoned by Disney/Dandyland, Disappear Holes, Sour Cola, Funnymouth and far too many others to name. This week’s recommendation is his new release, Dumb Dead Brother.
Dumb Dead Brother is a collection of 3 short horror-comedy stories that lean more into the ‘comedy’ side of the scale but manage to pull off a few genuinely spooky, tense and dramatic moments as well.
The stories all follow the protagonist, Toby (or Not), who was raised in the shadow of his perfect brother who died before he was born. When the titular Dumb Dead Brother (also named Toby) comes into Not’s life, he is dragged into a world of secret societies and monsters.
Centering around the CRP institute, a parody of writing projects such as the SCP foundation, the tales are full of metatextual jokes, winks to genre cliches and all-around fun concepts.
The stories are full of nods to Slimebeast’s other projects, so you’re bound to notice a few familiar names and characters if you’re a long-time reader.
Dumb Dead Brother is available from Slimebeast’s Patreon, which you can find here.
